From this chart (that is only indicative) one could deduce that storms strikes more often in the late afternoon and in the evening.

On August 19 1998, the same day when the counter was installed, the biggest storm of the year was recorded. 171 strikes were counted in that day and 166 in only 4 hours, that means a strike every minute and 27 seconds.
